Henway Park Wiffleball League

The Henway Park Wiffleball League was started in the summer of 2005 to try and spark a wiffle ball renaissance in Quincy. Henway Park is a totally portable wiffle ball field. The foul, hit, and fair play lines are fiberglass reinforced duct tape held down with wickets. There is a carpeted pitchers mound and batters box. The outfield wall is made of Tuff-R, a light insulation board, and painted Fenway green with markings. The scoreboard is all duct tape and velcro, and is sponsored by www.fabducttape.com, makers of fine duct tape items. Come out and watch a game! The league schedule will be posted shortly.

League Rules

1 THE FIELD: A 90 degree diamond with a hit line arcing 50 feet from home. A fair play line runs 12 feet in front of home. The foul poles are 90 feet from home. Center field is 100 feet from home. The pitching rubber is 40 feet from home plate. The batters box is 2 feet wide and 3 feet deep. A 3 X 2 foot strike box sits 3 feet behind home plate.

2 THE BALL: The Wiffle ball. No foreign matter may be added. If a ball becomes too crappy it will be ruled illegal and tossed out.

3 THE BAT: Plastic, round on all sides, no more than 38 inches long or 3 inches around. Bats may be taped up as wished, but will be tossed out if unsafe or too advantageous.

4 TEAMS: Rosters are 4-10 players. Teams bat all present players, but less than 3 only if shorthanded. Three players max on defense, 1 pitcher and 2 fielders. The fielders position themselves behind the hit line, moving freely after contact. Players showing up after the first pitch enter on defense and are placed at the lineup bottom. Zero players present at gametime is a forfeit. No pinch hitting.

5 THE GAME: Five innings/ 1 hour time limit. Three outs a side. Five balls is a walk, three strikes is an out. If conditions are windy the ump may disallow walks. Any pitch missed or fouled off, or that enters the strike box is a strike. Any pitch taken that doesnt enter the box is a ball. A foul tip on the 3rd strike is strike three. There is a 12 run rule after four innings. Umps may score all baserunners and end an inning to keep gameplay timely. Ties are decided by a home run derby.. A visiting team player will throw 7 pitches to a teammate, followed by the home team. Most homers wins. There is no base running . The score, outs, and baserunners will be tracked on a scoreboard. The leadoff batter may try to steal 2nd (50/50 safe or out) once per game.

6 HITTING: Men switch hands each at-bat, starting righty, women bat as wished. Batting out of order or with the wrong hand is umpire error, and corrected without penalty. Batters must have both feet in the box during a swing. If a batter leans into a pitch it will be called a strike.
A fair ball that goes past the hit line and lands short of the wall is a single. A fly ball hitting the wall is a double, unless it hits a triple wall. A fair fly ball clearing the wall is a home run.
A ground ball must reach the fair play line, otherwise it is a strike. Any fair ball that touches past the fair play line but does not touch past the hit line is an out, no runner advancement. If a ball touches down foul it is a strike. If a ball is caught on one hop by a pitcher and a double play is in order, the runner at first and the batter are out, all others advance one base. Batters are out if they interfere with a struck ball.

To bunt, a player squares to bunt prior to the pitch. If the bunted ball stays in the fair play area it is an out, advancing runners on 1st and/or 2nd one base. There are no walks issued after a batter tries to bunt.

Base runners move like this: One base on a single, two bases on a double or single that hits the wall, and three bases on a triple or home run. With two outs all runners advance one extra base on a hit. Any fly ball that is caught behind the hit line is a sac fly.

If the wall is damaged at all during the process of fielding a ball, the batter gets whatever type hit it appeared to be otherwise. If a wall section is damaged beyond usability, the damager will remit $10.00 to the league office to pay for another wall section because they are danged expensive.

7 PITCHING: Pitchers must be in contact with the pitching rubber during pitch. The Ryan Express Rule is in effect- players may throw hard, but not as hard as humanly possible. Think 80% of maximum effort or less. The ump may call a ball if he feels like a pitcher is throwing beyond this. If an umpire has to keep invoking the Ryan Express Rule he will call for another pitcher to step in.

8 MISCELLANY: Teams are encouraged to wear any kind of team clothing. No metal or hard plastic, or items that could cause injury are allowed. Fielders must be bare handed. Players may not interfere with or distract other players. There is no appeal process, no playing under protest, crying about calls, none of that. Whining players will be asked to don the Cap of Shame. Rules not stated will follow MLB in general, but the umpire's ruling is always final. The playing field will change location regularly, and will be emailed to all participants weekly. There will be a backup field noted as well. All proceeds beyond league costs will be given to charity. All expenses and stats will be kept online.
